His book explores initiatives by the Malaysian government in the practice of Sport for All from its
inception in the country until the present. Background information of the sport scene including the
history of sport in the country and the importance of sport in the national agenda are discussed. The
promulgation of the National Sports Policy in 1988 is evidence that the government sees sport as an
important part of Malaysian society. Three out of the four objectives of the Policy are related to Sport
for All. The main organization responsible for Sport for All is the Sports Division of the Ministry of Youth
and Sports and its state departments. The contribution of these and other government organizations
such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and local authorities, are evaluated in terms of
their roles in the promotion of Sport for All. A case study of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Youth
and Sports Department has been included to illustrate the implementation of Sport for All programmers
at state level. Historically the Malaysian government has placed priority on high performance sport. It
has only been in recent years that Sport for All has been given emphasis. The importance of Sport for All
at the individual, social and national levels in Malaysia is explored. The social outcomes are especially
important to multi‐cultural, multi‐racial and multi‐religious Malaysia. Another rationale for emphasizing
Sport for All is its relationship with high performance sport. With more Malaysians encouraged to be
involved in Sport for All, there is a larger talent pool from which to choose elite athletes.
