This book, along with two earlier books in this series (The Stateless Rohingya in Malaysia – Legal Status and Protection & The Risk of Statelessness: The Indigenous Peoples of Malaysia) have been written to equip the reader with adequate information regarding the issue of statelessness within Malaysia. The earlier books covered ex-situ stateless individuals and those at risk of statelessness. This book particularly refers to the in-situ stateless Indian community that have historically been residing in plantations in Malaysia and as such have not been able to acquire the relevant documents as evidence of Malaysian citizenship. An understanding of the role of the various stakeholders provides an appreciation of what is happening on the ground and paves the way towards the bottom-up approach in research. The Malaysian Government has made significant efforts to address the challenges faced by stateless Indians. There are, however, some gaps to be filled. This book addresses some of those gaps and provides feasible recommendations that could alleviate the plight of the stateless Indian.
