Set in multi-ethnic Cape Town in the heyday of the Dutch East India Company, this well-researched historical novel explores the life of Anna de Koningh, the daughter of Angela of Bengal, a slave who was freed at the Cape. Annas marriage to the Swedish officer, Olof Bergh, forms the core of the novel. It illuminates many corners of Cape society and culture, and what Annas life meant to her and others.
